A safety recall is issued when a manufacturer or a regulator determines that a vehicle has a defect that poses a safety risk or fails to meet a federal standard. For FCA vehicles, recall repairs are performed free of charge at authorized dealers, regardless of the vehicle's age or ownership history. This guide explains how the system works and how to check your own vehicle.
Two sources of recall data
There are two authoritative places recall information comes from, and they differ in detail:
- NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) publishes recalls at the make/model/year level. This tells you whether a campaign applies to your type of vehicle, but not whether your specific VIN has been repaired.
- Mopar / FCA provides VIN-specific status: whether a given campaign is open or already completed on your exact vehicle, plus FCA campaign numbers and owner-letter documents.
Our recalls lookup checks the manufacturer source first for VIN-specific status and falls back to NHTSA when needed.
Understanding a recall entry
Each recall typically includes:
- Campaign number — an identifier (an FCA letter-code and/or an NHTSA number) you can reference with a dealer.
- Component — the affected system, such as brakes, airbags, or wiring.
- Condition and risk — what can go wrong and why it matters.
- Remedy — the repair the dealer will perform.
- Status — whether the repair is outstanding for your VIN.
Stop-drive and park-outside warnings
Some recalls carry urgent advisories. A stop-drive notice means the vehicle should not be driven until repaired. A park-outside notice warns of a fire risk that can occur even when parked, so the vehicle should be kept away from structures. If your lookup shows either flag, act on it promptly and contact a dealer.
How to check and act
Enter your VIN in the recalls tool. If an open recall appears, contact any authorized FCA/Stellantis dealer with the campaign number to schedule the free repair. Because model-level data can lag VIN-specific records, always confirm final status with the dealer.
